The Big John @ Breakfast show is a radio
show on weekday mornings between 6am-10am. The show is presented at this time
to catch commuters on the way to work, for this reason it is targeted at people
around the age of 18-60 as they will most likely be awake and travelling to
work. This target audience and time, influences the topics of discussion on the
show. The discussions on the show involve new media, like album and film
releases. There is also lots of general conversation to entertain the listener
and keep there attention as they make there way to work. On one of the shows,
there was talk about the new Moor Market in Sheffield. This is a great choice
of topic for the show as it will be able to spark an interest from its local
listeners. Using local news will help the station maintain its firm local roots
which will help them subliminally tempt its listeners to stick with Hallam as
it gives a local and homely feel due to it intertwining with the local
community.
The adverts used are usually by local business’
this will help the company appeal to the local listeners as they will be able
to get access to the business as it is most likely to be close by. Hallam also
use this so that the listeners feel that the radio station is a big lover of
the local community.
The jingles Hallam FM use depend on the
show they are doing, they will usually say the name of the show accompanied by
the music. Saying the name of the show denotes the show its self and the host
of it. But the music connotes the type of music that will be played on the
show. If the show is mostly modern pop, it may have an upbeat and happy theme,
but if the show plays more modern electronic type of music, the genre of music
that the jingle accompanies will be similar to the genre in the show. The electronic
music jingles may connote the fact that it will appeal to a younger audience,
whereas an 80’s themed jingle on an 80’s style show connotes that it will
appeal to an older audience.
Hallam FM try to create a close sense of
community towards their listeners by interacting with the audience. Often they
take surveys in the local areas, not only does this help the listeners interact
with the radio and make them feel like they are a part of the show, but it also
allows the radio station to build up a relationship with its audience to
establish themselves and maintain its reputation in the community. It offers
incentives to its audience by asking them to let the station know its favorite
music, and offer prizes to people who compete the survey. This will again allow
the listener to feel wanted by the station and maintain its strong
listenership.
There are a few Vox pops used Big John @
Breakfast. Some are used to involve the listeners by getting traffic news from
them. This allows the concerned listeners to feel accepted by the station. This
connotes that the station is concerned with the people in the area it serves,
as they want to help them make their journey as easy as they can.
There are many competitions available over
the Christmas holiday period. These will help the station keep their listeners
returning over the holidays. These competitions are not only incentives for the
audience, but also for local business’ so that they can make themselves known
in the area by possibly donating prizes and helping with competitions. The
station also participates with local charities. There is a small section of the
show where the audience is asked to donate gifts and presents for ill or in
need children. This will help the audience interact and give the sense of community
that Hallam wishes to achieve.
